Before Cryder House there was the beautiful estate of Harvey S. Firestone, founder of Firestone Tires, was located on Powells Cove Blvd at Cryder’s Point on the Long Island Sound.
The home was occupied by his family until his death in 1932. The home was turned into a bed and breakfast named Michel on the Sound. It was a favorite for many broadway stars and people recovering from surgeries who came out for the day or stayed for the weekends. It featured a deluxe swimming pool, tennis court, and private beach.
It was later demolished in 1964 to make room for a 20 story apartment building called the Cryder House.
